- Xifaxan® works in IBS-D by stopping the growth of harmful bacteria that cause diarrhea
- Xifaxan® is also indicated for hepatic encephalopathy treatment in adults who have liver disease
- Tell your doctor if you have severe liver impairment as this may increase the effect of Xifaxan®
- Tell your doctor if you are taking P-glycoprotein or OATP inhibitors, like cyclosporine, as they may increase Xifaxan® absorbption
- Tell your doctor if you are taking warfarin as its dose may need to be adjusted to ensure it works properly
- Pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding should inform their doctor before treatment with Xifaxan® as it can cause harm to unborn babies or nursing infants
- Xifaxan®’s most common side effects in IBS-D are nausea and an increase in liver enzymes
- As with other antibiotics, there is a possibility that Xifaxan® can cause diarrhea. Contact your doctor if your diarrhea does not improve or gets worse as it can range from mild diarrhea to life-threatening colitis
